Land Acknowledgement

Project 10 organizes and works on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation. The area colonially referred to as “Montreal” ' is known as Tio’tia:ke in the language of the Kanien’kehá:ka. It has historically been a meeting place for many First Nations.

Considering the origin of our organization as stemming from the Batshaw child welfare system, it is integral for us to also recognize the role that these systems have historically played in the lives of Indigenous peoples and the ways in which they continue to affect Indigenous people today. A land acknowledgement is merely the first step towards truth and reconciliation. We firmly believe that while acknowledgment is important, it is not a sufficient response to our complicity in the violence committed against the Indigenous peoples whose territories we occupy. We have a collective responsibility to acknowledge our origins, as well as to take concrete steps to move forward, informed by the voices and lived experiences of Indigenous peoples.

As such,we invite fellow settlers and displaced peoples to explore concrete ways to give back. You can consult the list of organisations developed with the help of Kira London-Nadeau here. Furthermore, P10 will also provide our office space for free to Indigenous groups, initiatives and events. Please reach out to questions@p10.qc.ca for more information.

P10 is committed to listening, honoring and uplifting the voices of Indigenous peoples, as we recognize them as the true custodians of the land of Turtle Island. Today, it is home to a diverse population of Indigenous and other peoples. We respect the continued connections with the past, present and future in our ongoing relationships with Indigenous and other peoples within the Montreal community.
